Demo against bail of abettors in Noor Mukadam’s murder
Family and friends of the slain Noor Mukadam staged a peaceful protest outside the Islamabad High Court (IHC) during a Monday, August 13, hearing into the bail plea of prime accused Zahir Jaffer’s father, Zakir Jaffer.
The police challan submitted to the court held that Zakir as well as nominated employees of psychiatric institute Therapy Works had aided and abetted Zahir.
During the Monday hearing, Justice Aamer Farooq once again issued notices on the post-arrest bail pleas of the prime accused’s parents. The court also directed the counsel for Noor Mukadam’s family, Advocate Shah Khawar, to submit the plaintiff’s power of attorney. Justice Farooq adjourned the hearing till September 15.
IGP calls for harassment awareness on campuses
Newly-appointed Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Rao Sardar Anwar while presiding over his first departmental meeting stated that there will be zero tolerance for crimes against women and children.
He instructed city and district police officers to form teams to visit educational institutions, and conduct awareness drives and deliver lectures on sexual violence and harassment to curb such crimes. The IGP directed that arrangements for awareness drives should be made within the next week.
Pakistan eighth most affected by long-term climate risks
A German Watch briefing paper has ranked Pakistan among the top ten countries most affected by long-term climate risks due to adverse impacts of climate change between 2000 and 2019. The brief, titled Global Climate Risk Index 2021, stated that Pakistan had suffered 173 climate change induced events in the last two decades which resulted in an average of 0.3 fatalities per 100,000 inhabitants and a collective $3.77 billion in economic losses.
