4 year old’s rapists, murderers still roam free
Civil society organizations, political activists, traders and locals in Karak held a demonstration on Tuesday, April 6, over the police’s failure to apprehend those involved in the gruesome rape and murder of four-year-old Hareem Fatima. Protesters further threatened of a sit-in outside the IGP’s office if the investigation continues to be delayed.
Elders at the protest claimed that the police had initially informed the girl’s family that they were close to tracing the criminals, but in the two weeks since Hareem’s murder no arrests have been made as of yet. Furthermore, the police were now pressurizing the aggrieved family.
Rights bodies, lawyers denounce PM’s rape rhetoric
The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC), the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) and women’s rights activists on Tuesday issued their condemnation of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s comments on rape culture, terming them factually incorrect, insensitive and dangerous.
On Sunday, in a live televised phone call session, the Premier blamed increasing incidents of rape involving women and children on vulgarity propagated via media. The HRCP termed the rhetoric ignorant of where, why and how rape occurs, and stated that it laid blame on rape survivors which range from children to victims of honour crimes.
Activists demanded an immediate apology and renewed commitment from the government in tackling rape as an act of violence and power, rather than temptation.
Retired professor goes missing in Lahore
The family of Professor Abid Mahmood, who only last year had retired after 20 years of service from the Government Dyal Singh College, appealed to the government for his immediate recovery. They claim that Prof. Mahmood left his home in Ali Colony in Walton, Lahore, last Sunday but never returned. After an initial search, they registered a missing complaint at the Factory Area police station. Police have launched an investigation into the case.
