A woman, who ran away from a forced marriage in Kashmore Kandhkot district of Sindh, has been sent to a shelter home while police have arrested an uncle for selling her to the groom.

The woman, Pervaizan Khatoon, reached a police station after slipping away from her wedding procession on way to the groom’s village on 27th February.

The previously divorced woman told police officials that her uncle and brother forced her to a marry man after receiving a hefty sum from the groom. The woman said she was not happy with her marriage. She had dodged the wedding party by complaining of vomiting. She got off from the tractor-driven trolley in which she was riding along with other wedding guests and family members. She told the police that she was divorced and had a son, Khalid. She said the marriage was unlawful and against her consent.

Pervaizan Khatoon recorded her statement at the police station and sought protection. A local court has sent the woman to a shelter house after she refused to go with her family saying her life was in danger. SSP Kashmore Amjad Sheikh said the uncle of the woman has been arrested in the case. However, police refused to divulge details about action against the groom.
