
SC Refuses To Hear Health Experts And Amend Order
The Supreme Court on Tuesday, May 19, snubbed plea submitted by Attorney-General of Pakistan Khalid Javed Khan plea to consider the assessments by epidemiologists regarding the actual threat level of the virus and amend the apex court’s prior order to make inter-city and inter-province transport operational, and to reopen small businesses, markets, and malls. The Supreme Court rejected the appeal, stating that it was completely aware of the virus threat, however, the order was issued in light of the devastation the lockdown has wrought on the economy and ordered the resumption of commercial activity to prevent a complete economic meltdown.
Waziristan Honor Killing JIT Formed
Bannu police constituted a four-member joint investigation team (JIT) to inquire into the honor killing of two yet to be identified Waziristani girls over an “objectionable” video that went viral on social media a few days prior. Police have so far arrested one of the deceased girls’ father, Radawal Khan, a cousin of the victims, Roohuddin, and two others, Umer Ayaz who had shot the video, and his friend Fida Muhammad who is suspected of having shared the video online. Prime suspect, Mohammad Aslam, who is believed to have carried out the fatal shooting of the two girls, is still at large.
Child Sexual Abuse
An anti-terrorism court (ATC) sentenced a man on Tuesday, May 19, for raping a 12 year old girl with two accomplices in Karachi in 2015. The accused was also told to pay a fine of Rs. 2 lacs to the victim – should he fail to pay the fine, his sentence will be raised to an additional year in imprisonment.
On August 29, 2015, the girl was abducted by the prime accused, Sharif, and his accomplices Noor Ahmed and Arif, while she was out getting groceries in Memon Goth, Karachi. The suspects gang-raped the girl after rendering her unconscious and then later dumped her outside her home. Sharif was convicted for the heinous offense after his arrest in 2018 while Noor Ahmed and Arif remain at large.
Meanwhile, a 15 year old boy was sexually assaulted within a mosque in Gujrat during aitekaf prayers on Thursday, May 14. According to the FIR report filed by the victim’s father, the boy had gone for prayer at the local mosque. However, when his father later arrived to pick him up, he heard his child screaming. Rushing inside, he saw that one Tabrez was attempting to rape his son. The suspect managed to flee the scene.
