In an interview with journalist Munizae Jahangir, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister, Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan, stated that the government was in full support of reinstating student unions. She reminisced about her days as a student union leader, however when posed with the matter of the FIR registered against students for sedition recently, Awan said that dropping an FIR is a due process and takes time. She assured she will look into the matter as it was against the vision of the PM, Imran Khan, to curb student voices.
So far, none of the charges including sedition have been retracted by the government despite repeated assurances. In fact, the Punjab government has actively pursued the cases filed against students in court. Advocate Ramis Sohail, representing Alamgir Wazir who is currently in custody, questioned these promises of discarding the FIR. He said there is much confusion surrounding these assurances, especially considering the fact that public prosecutors, who are the agents of law for the state, are actively challenging Alamgir Wazir’s remand and pressing for further investigation.
