Senate Committee on Human Rights lambastes Punjab police for lodging FIR against Iqbal Lala and student protesters

The Senate Committee on Human Rights held a hearing on the 6th of December on 4 concerns, one of which was the matter of the sedition charges levied against Iqbal Lala, father of Mashal Khan, a student who was lynched on premises of Abdul Wali Khan University by fellow students over false allegations of blasphemy. The FIR also indicted 300 or so unidentified students.

The Committee lambasted Punjab police for registering the FIR against the grieving father of the slain Mashal Khan. It recommended that the DIG Punjab remove Iqbal Lala’s name from the FIR and consider the apology of students who have been accused of making anti-state remarks during the Students Solidarity March on 29th November.

The opposition at the hearing also raised their objections on the arrest of Alamgir Wazir, nephew of MNA and PTM leader Ali Wazir and a student of Punjab University, who was picked up immediately following the march and arrested.
