Despite an Islamabad High Court order allowing Imran Khan’s relatives and lawyers to meet with him every Tuesday at Adiala Jail, the jail administration blocked the visit on June 9, prompting a protest and sit-in outside the prison walls.
PTI lawyers and family members had gathered outside the jail expecting access under the IHC directive, but were turned away. Khan, PTI founder and former prime minister, has been held at Adiala Jail for nearly three years and carries multiple sentences across several cases.
A large number of the PTI central leadership, ministers, lawyers and workers, including Imran Khan’s sisters Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan, gathered outside Adiala Jail. The IHC has pointed out in its decision that Tuesday is the day scheduled for meetings of family members and lawyers and Thursday for party leaders, but despite this, the jail administration did not allow the lawyers and family to meet with the PTI founder.

PTI leaders and lawyers present outside Adiala Jail told the media that they had reached before the scheduled time with a court order, but the police and administration stopped them from going ahead and forced them to park their vehicles on the side of the road. The leaders said that the jail administration sent them back after a long wait, saying that the meeting time was over.
Advocate Ali Zaman, who was included in the list of visitors sent to the prison, spoke to Voicepk about it.
“For the past seven months, no one has been allowed to meet Imran Khan, which is a complete violation of the prison manual, the law and the constitution,” he said. “Actually this is a criminal act. It is tantamount to a violation of the constitution. Despite all our efforts, these people always trash court orders and do not allow us to meet him. Every Thursday, workers come here, and they have come today as well, but a curfew-like atmosphere has been created here, as if we have reached Kashmir, not Adiala. The 10-minute journey to reach here has to be covered in an hour and a half. People come with the hope that someone or the other will meet Khan Sahib and they will get information about Khan’s health. They expect that whatever orders Khan Sahib gives will be implemented.”
He alleges that he is still concerned about Imran’s health, saying that he only gets information about it from the media, which he does not trust.
On the other hand, Khyber Pukhtunkhwa Information Minister Shafi Jan, while talking to Voicepk commented, “Apparently the jail superintendent is so strong that he does not follow any law or constitution. Imran’s sisters are here, his lawyers are also here. Tuesday is meant to be their meeting day, but the roads here have been blocked by barricades. They should keep in mind that the wheel of time turns. Today we are on the racing hand, tomorrow they will be. PTI does not believe in the politics of revenge, but do only what you can bear tomorrow.”
Aleema Khan, the sister of the PTI founder, also expressed concern about his health. She termed this behavior of the government and the jail administration a serious violation of court orders and basic constitutional and human rights.
“Not allowing a meeting with our brother is complete injustice,” she said. “The IHC has allowed a meeting twice a week, but these court orders are being continuously flouted. Not allowing a meeting with the PTI founder is tantamount to robbing our basic constitutional and human rights, which cannot be allowed under any circumstances.”
Referring to the current political and economic situation of the country, she said that for the last three years, the entire country had been in a state of severe anxiety and crisis because the country’s most popular leader had been unjustly imprisoned. She questioned how long the ‘injustice’ would last in the country. Law and order and administrative structure had been paralyzed across the country, she said, and the only solution to this political instability was the immediate release of Imran Khan and the holding of free and fair elections in the country.
