A young landowner, Nadir Khan Jamali was killed in an alleged police encounter in Dadu, on January 6, 2026. Today his family and relatives held a protest against the Sindh Police claiming that the encounter was fake.
Previously police claimed that Jamali had been a wanted man for various crimes, and had been killed in an exchange of fire during an arrest attempt. Sindh Police have also recommended a judicial inquiry into the incident.
The Inspector General of Sindh Police’s office has sent a request to the Sindh Home Department to initiate judicial investigations by contacting the Sindh High Court. In a letter, the Additional IGP Operations suggested that the encounter that occurred between January 6 and 7 in the jurisdictions of Dadu Police Station Sections A and B, should be fully investigated under the supervision of the District and Session Judge.
Protest demonstrations and demands
Meanwhile protest demonstrations were held in Dadu and Karachi on January 12, in which the family of the deceased and representatives of civil society demanded a judicial inquiry.
On Monday, January 12 members of the Jamali family, relatives, and community members held a protest rally in Dadu against the accused police officers, which proceeded from Allama I.I. Qazi Library to Dadu Press Club.
The protesters warned that if the SSP, the respective SHOs, and other involved police officers were not arrested and an FIR was not registered against them by January 18, they will stage a sit-in on the Indus Highway and block the road.
‘Police fabricated cases against Jamali’
The brother of the deceased explained their perspective.
“Nadir Jamali was killed as an innocent man in a fake police encounter. Police had fabricated a false case against him. He surrendered himself, but police killed him in a fake encounter immediately after his arrest,” said his brother. “Police had also arrested our other brother Bakar and detained six of our employees. That’s why Nadir wanted to surrender himself. He went to the police on his own because he believed the case against him was false and he would prove himself innocent, but the police committed great injustice and killed him within thirty to forty minutes of his arrest.”
The family held responsible the SSP Dadu Amir Saud Magsi, female SHO Benazir Jamali, SHO Qurban Qambrani, Khalil Rehman Masan, including the in-charge CIA and other police officers and demanded that a case be immediately registered against them and they be arrested.
Sardar Dathal Khan Jamali, chief of the Jamali tribe, said they are not satisfied with the district police’s preliminary investigations. “Nadir Khan was a major landowner and he is being implicated in minor crimes,” he said. According to him, the Jamali community is protesting this matter throughout Sindh.
Karachi protest demands judicial inquiry
A protest was also held outside the Karachi Press Club by relatives of the deceased Nadir Jamali and civil society, demanding a judicial inquiry to investigate the incident.
“If police are involved in Nadir Jamali’s murder, how can they conduct a transparent inquiry? Police’s record in Sindh is also extremely poor; there is no hope for transparent investigations from them,” questioned civil society leader Rukhsana Halepoto, Sattar Zangejo, and others while speaking to Voicepk. “Police inquiry is always biased. Only a judicial inquiry can bring out the facts. A judicial inquiry should be conducted into this incident so that all facts come to light. If a judicial inquiry is not conducted, we will protest throughout Sindh.”
Political parties’ condemnation
Member of National Assembly (MNA) Rafiq Ahmed Jamali from Pakistan Peoples Party in Dadu, also condemned the killing, calling it ‘extrajudicial’. The MNA met with Sindh’s Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar last week and demanded a transparent investigation.
Political and nationalist parties have also condemned both Jamali’s killing in Dadu and the murder of farmer Kailash Kolhi, who was allegedly shot dead by a landowner in Badin district.
Family refuses to participate in police inquiry
DIG Police Hyderabad had appointed SSP Hyderabad Adil Chandio as inquiry officer; however, the family of the deceased have completely rejected the police inquiry. Their position was that they do not want a police inquiry but a judicial inquiry.
Inquiry officer Adil Chandio had recorded statements from police officers, while the deceased’s heirs refused to record their statements before the police inquiry officer.
