MATIARI
A young female lecturer, and mother of three children, has been brutally murdered by her husband in an alleged honour killing in Sindh’s Matiari district.
The horrifying incident has sent shockwaves through the village of Bakr Jamali in New Saeedabad Tehsil.
Afshan Rabia Jamali, a 30-year-old lecturer, was shot dead by her husband, Imdad Jamali, on the night of November 24. Imdad Jamali, who was arrested, claimed in his confession to police that he had killed Afshan after failing to convince her to end her alleged relationship with another man.
But Haji Muhammad Jamali, Afshan’s father, disputes the accusation on his daughter and said his son in law was greedy and had killed his daughter after she declined to seek from her family Rs1.5 million in funds for his proposed business venture.
The victim’s father has filed a murder complaint against his son-in-law.
“My daughter was a respected and educated woman,” said Haji Muhammad Jamali, who has recently returned from Dubai. “She was a lecturer at the village school. Her husband murdered her out of greed for money and property. Now, I urge the police and authorities to punish the killers and provide us justice.”
Afshan’s brother, Shahzad Jamali, said his family has been residing in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates for the past 20 years. His sister also completed her education in Dubai. “Imdad callously shot my sister thrice in a premeditated and planned murder,” he told Voicepk. Afshan had recently passed the Sindh Public Service Commission examination and was working as a lecturer.
The suspect was arrested by the New Saeedabad police at the crime scene and confessed to murdering Afshan in the name of honour.
According to Karam Ali, the Station House Officer of New Saeedabad Police Station, the father of the accused, Wazir, and brother, Darya Khan, have also been nominated in the murder case but are currently absconding.
The suspect has confessed to the killing. The police have obtained a four day physical remand of the main accused in the murder case from the court.
“Afshan’s family, in the first investigation report, stated that their son-in-law Imdad Jamali used to torture their daughter and press her to seek money from her family, but when she refused, Imad shot her dead in anger,” Karam Ali said.
Haseen Musrrat, a women’s rights activist, expressed deep concern over the rising number of cases where women in Sindh are being murdered on pretext of honour.
“While laws for women’s protection are in place, the government must now ensure their implementation to save women’s lives,” she said.
The incident highlights the ongoing issue of honor killings in Pakistan and the urgent need for stronger measures to protect women.
