LAHORE
Husnain Shah, a journalist working with a television channel, was shot dead by unknown assailants outside Lahore Press Club on Monday.
Shah was associated with Capital TV as a crime reporter. He had spent many years in the profession.
According to details, Shah left his office on. Davies Road for press club at around 4:30 pm on Monday. He stopped by at a bakery close to the press club on Shimla Pahari on the way but just as he disembarked, two unknown assailants riding a motorbike fired multiple shots at him. He was pronounced dead at the spot. Police found at least ten empty bullet shells at the scene of the crime.
CEO Capital TV Hashaam Riaz Sheikh in a tweet termed the killing as shocking.
The police have taken the body into custody and probing the matter from all angles including personal enmity.
Journalists bodies have condemned the incident and demanded a fair and impartial investigation.
In December 2021, Parliament enacted a Journalist Protection act to provide security and end impunity for crimes against journalists and media professionals.
According to the PFUJ, over 130 journalists have been killed since 2002, but not a single person has been punished.
According to the World Press Freedom Index compiled by Reporters Without Borders, Pakistan ranks 145 out of 180 in press freedom in the world.
