Man, woman killed for ‘honour’ in Jacobabad
On Sunday, May 16, armed men on a motorbike fired upon one Abdul Hakeem Brohi (35) in the commercial area of Garhi Khairo, Jacobabad district in Sindh. He later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital. The same assailants then later gunned down Rani (30), wife of Ghulam Rasool Umrani, at her residence.
According to the Garhi Khairo police, the assailants belong to the Umrani family and escaped the town immediately after committing the crimes. The deceased were shifted to the taluka hospital for autopsy.
Woman found hanged in in-laws’ home in Lahore
A 19-year-old woman allegedly hanged herself from a ceiling fan in her in-laws’ home in Green Town on Monday, May 17, due to ‘strained relations’ with her husband whom she had married of her choice a year back.
According to the initial police report, the young woman had allegedly taken the extreme step following a domestic dispute with her husband. However, the deceased’s parents claim she may have been murdered by her in-laws. Police provided that they have shifted the body to a morgue for an autopsy to ascertain the cause of death, and will take further action given the results of the postmortem report.
Police station attacked by mob attempting to lynch blasphemy accused
An enraged mob on Monday night stormed Golra police station in Islamabad demanding the custody of a man detained for allegedly committing blasphemy.
Villagers wielding sticks and iron rods beat back security at the gate and vandalized the offices of the investigating officers, SHO and clerks. Police personnel as well as the blasphemy-accused were forced to barricade themselves in the lockup and other rooms of the police station.
Reinforcements were called in, including from the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and Anti-Riot Unit (ARU) who reached Golra police station and rescued staff. Police were able to disperse the mob, who put up fierce resistance despite being teargassed and baton-charged, after nearly an hour.
Police later shifted the blasphemy suspect to an undisclosed location under tight security.
