Policeman, accomplices charged with rape
Ahmedpur East police on Sunday launched a search operation for three men, one of whom is a constable, and a young woman believed to be in their captivity. A case has been registered under sections 376 (punishment for rape) and 496-A (enticing or taking away or detaining with criminal intent a woman) of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of the woman’s sister, who had also been taken captive by the accused but had managed to escape.
According to the complainant, she and her sister would sell clothes with the aid of the nominated constable. However, on January 27, both women were abducted by the policeman and his accomplice and taken to a second co-conspirator’s home where they were illegally detained, tortured and gang-raped over the course of several days. The complainant was able to make her escape and was able to report the incident to the police. She further stated that her sister was also still captive.
Police have stated that they have traced the criminals and will recover the accused as well as the complainant’s sister soon.
Man guns down niece, youth for ‘honour’
On Saturday, February 6, one Sohbat Leerwani gunned down two youths, one of whom was his relative, in Leerwani village in Garhi Khero taluka of Jacobabad district. According to Miranpur Buriro police, Sohbat suspected his niece Lalzadi of having an affair with village resident Awais Leerwani. The accused shot them dead for ‘honour’ and then fled the scene.
Waziristan IDPs bereft of food
Some 15,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) and their families from North Waziristan stage week-long protest in Bannu over the lack of provision of food rations for the past three months. The protesters also expressed their discontent over the delays in disbursement of Rs. 12,000 cash grants to affected families by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). Demonstrators also deplored the lack of any monetary assistance as well as no food provisions for some 5,000 family members of North Waziristan IDPs stuck in Afghanistan.
The protesters called upon reinstatement of ration supplies, timely disbursement of cash assistance and immediate relocation of IDPs at the Khost Gilan Camp to their ancestral homes.
