Doctor succumbs to the virus
Dr. Muzamil Abbas, a trainee at Nishtar Hospital, died on August 5 after a long battle with COVID-19. Dr. Abbas contracted the virus last month and was taken to Recep Tayyip Erdogan Hospital in Muzaffargarh, where due to his deteriorating condition he was placed on a ventilator. His illness fluctuated – recovering briefly before deteriorating again; he died shortly after. Funeral prayers took place in Dr. Abbas’s hometown of Mauza Shah Dhanial, Salaar Wahin.
COVID-19 deaths in Punjab, Sindh
Four succumbed to the virus in Punjab over the past 24 hours on August 6, bringing the provincial death toll to 2,157. Another 235 confirmed cases were also reported during the same time period, with 54 from Rawalpindi, 52 from Lahore, 30 from Gujranwala, 22 from Sialkot, and 11 from Multan.
Meanwhile, in Sindh, COVID-19 claimed 14 lives overnight, with the provincial death toll now standing at 2,245. According to Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, 5,436 people were tested for the virus during the aforementioned time frame, of which 357 have tested positive. The positivity rate for this batch of screenings was 6.6%; the overall positivity rate in Sindh (according to official numbers, which some have criticized as underreported), is 15.7%, with 122,373 positive cases from 786,826 tests.
Twin cities cases rise above 21,000
29 people tested positive for the novel coronavirus disease in Islamabad and Rawalpindi over the past 24 hours. Of these positive cases, 27 were from Islamabad and 2 from Rawalpindi. As a result of this increase, the number of cases in the twin cities has surpassed 21,000, coming to a total of 21,025. However, the twin cities have seen no deaths during the 24-hour timeframe, a temporary silver lining of what continues to be a bleak situation.
