Gunfire and physical altercations break out during student protest at Sarhad University

A student protest at Sarhad University’s Islamabad campus turned violent when a Pakistan Army Lieutenant Colonel—husband of staff member Dr. Ana Atta—arrived on scene, resulting in physical altercations and aerial gunfire. The unrest followed the suspension of former HOD Dr. Jadoon Khan over harassment and corruption charges. Police have promised action under the Army Act, and regular campus operations have since resumed.

ISLAMABAD

The Sarhad University incident, involving gunfire by an individual in military uniform, during a student protest has brought to light various aspects of the dispute between Dr. Jadoon Khan, the Head of Department and Dr. Ana, HR officer.

Meanwhile, students maintained their stance from a day ago, saying that they were protesting in support of the suspended HOD, Dr. Jadoon Khan, who was allegedly being threatened and pressured to resign from his job by HR employee Dr Ana.

Background of dispute

The dispute between Dr. Khan and Dr Ana Atta, began on August 21 when a written application was submitted by Ana Atta to the SHO of Islamabad’s DHA Police Station. Prior to this, upon a police application submitted by Dr. Ana, Dr. Khan had tendered a written apology.

The application alleged that an Jadoon Khan threatened her over the phone and used abusive language. The application appealed for police intervention to prevent any further untoward incident.

Subsequently, a written letter of apology was submitted by Dr. Jadoon Khan (Head of Allied Health Sciences) at Sarhad University Islamabad Campus, in which Dr. Khan apologized for his inappropriate behavior.

SUIT Islamabad faculty WhatsApp group

Meanwhile, WhatsApp chat attributed to this group has also been circulating. It includes allegations made by Dr. Ana Atta regarding communications between faculty members, students, and the university administration.

In the messages, Dr. Ana alleged that students were being used in conflicts among senior staff, and she accused Dr. Jadoon Khan of involving students in disputes with faculty members.

She specifically named a few students and alleged that they were involved in meetings and administrative conflict incidents.

These messages also referenced a meeting held near the Campus Director’s office and questioned whether students were called without authorization. Other allegations in the WhatsApp chat included claims that rumors regarding the university’s registration were spread and fee vouchers were collected from students.

A lecturer named Dr. Jawad Azam responded in the chat, stating that he was no longer the class teacher for one of the mentioned students and had had no contact with them.

This leaked conversation presents one side of an internal conflict. Its authenticity, full background, and the accuracy of the allegations would require independent verification.

Developments at Sarhad University

According to sources, the former Head of the Allied Health Sciences Department, Dr. Jadoon Khan, was suspended following allegations of alleged corruption and harassment of female students. Following this, Dr. Ana was appointed to a leadership role in Student Affairs. A harassment complaint had also been registered against Dr. Jadoon, and the police emergency helpline was also contacted.

Following the suspension, students allegedly launched a protest demanding his reinstatement. According to the events of August 24, Dr. Ana went to the area of the campus where students were protesting. Tensions escalated, and a student grabbed her collar and threatened her. These allegations are also currently under investigation.

Arrival of army officer

Dr. Ana’s husband is serving as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Pakistan Army.

According to the statement given by the police regarding the incident, he arrived at the university following a call from his wife. Reportedly, the situation escalated after inappropriate remarks or catcalls were made toward the family. Physical altercation ensued after this.

Online circulating videos

In videos related to this matter, a group of students can be seen surrounding the army officer and engaging in physical confrontation. Other footage shows pushing and shoving, showing the officer falling or being surrounded. Police sources allege that the officer fired shots into the air during the confrontation.

According to sources, some individuals were involved in violence against the officer and others. Claims regarding the use of punches, elbows, and iron rods have also surfaced.

Yesterday, regarding the issue of the students’ protest outside Sarhad University, AIG Operations Captain (Retired) Hamza Humayun reached the scene to hold negotiations with the students.

Speaking to the students on the occasion, AIG Operations Captain (R) Hamza Humayun stated, “Alhamdulillah, we have enough credibility that whatever we promise, we fulfill. We have come here because there was a report of firing on unarmed, innocent children.”

He further added, “Whoever fired, whether he was in uniform, in service, or a Brigadier, I do not know his name. We know the law of the military; it is an extremely strict law and is ready to be activated even before us, without any hindrance. This law also applies to every officer under the Army Act.”

Giving full assurance to the students, the AIG Operations said, “This is Hamza Humayun’s guarantee to you that strict action will be taken against the officer involved.”

When contacted by Voicepk, the university administration stated that the ongoing protest at the university has ended, regular academic activities are continuing, and security agencies are taking action regarding the incident that took place in the morning.
