Islamabad shootout sparks high-security Alert: IGP holds emergency meeting while citizens voice concerns

ISLAMABAD
Islamabad Police have placed the federal capital on a high security alert following a shootout and an alleged encounter at a picket in the rural zone, which left one suspect injured and another on the run.
This comes at a time when security measures in Islamabad are already heightened since the past several months due to ongoing Iran-US talks, with joint checkpoints set up by security agencies across various sectors of the city.

A police official from the Koral Police Station, under whose jurisdiction the incident took place, confirmed the incident to Voicepk and said the matter was currently under investigation. “One of the suspects is at large while the other is undergoing treatment,” he said on conditon of anonymity. “No more details of this case can be shared with the media at this time.”

According to media reports, this security breakthrough occurred when a six-member police team deployed near the Japan Road railway crossing was conducting snap-checking as part of a general hold-up. Two suspicious individuals riding a motorcycle appeared from the direction of the Kak Bridge.

Noticing that the motorcycle was missing its registration plate, the team signaled them to stop. However, the riders abandoned the bike on the spot and fled toward the nearby green cover and thicket.
Reports state that as the personnel chased them into concealment and attempted to apprehend one of the suspects, the other opened direct fire on the police team. While the policemen remained unhurt due to their bulletproof jackets and protective gear, police have claimed that one suspect sustained a bullet injury in the retaliatory fire and fell to the ground, and his accomplice managed to escape using the dense foliage as cover.

The police took the injured suspect into custody and shifted him to the hospital. Police further claim that upon verifying the motorcycle’s data, it was found to have been stolen from the Kirpa police station area back in April 2026.

Amid these rising security concerns, Imad Khan, a journalist and resident of Islamabad’s F-11 sector, shared his perspective on the growing unease among citizens.

“Crime is increasing day by day in Islamabad,” he said. “Just the other day, I went for a walk with some friends on the Margalla hills trail in front of D-12. In front of my eyes, robbers snatched mobile phones from a family at gunpoint, leaving them absolutely traumatized. We comforted them and informed the police from the spot. People should at least have a sense of security in the capital city. If there is no sense of security even here, you can well imagine the plight of people living in other cities and regions.”

The police have treated this incident as a serious one, and in context of this as well as the overall security of the city, an official statement issued by the Islamabad Police stated that a high-level meeting was chaired on Monday by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, to review the law and order situation in the federal capital. The meeting was attended by DIG Headquarters Muhammad Atique Tahir, DG Safe City Muhammad Haroon Joiya, DIG Islamabad Muhammad Jawad Tariq, DIG Security Rana Umar Farooq, and other senior officers.

According to the Islamabad Police spokesperson, the meeting conducted a comprehensive review of various matters, including the overall law and order situation in the federal capital, ongoing crime prevention measures, the progress of investigations into heinous cases, operations against proclaimed and habitual offenders, intelligence-led policing, the effective use of modern technology, the Safe City surveillance system, emergency response mechanisms, interdepartmental coordination, and the delivery of timely and quality police services to the public.

The IGP Islamabad strictly directed all officers to intensify operations against crime to maintain peace in the federal capital, emphasizing that indiscriminate action must be taken against criminal elements, proclaimed offenders, and habitual suspects. He made it clear that pending under-investigation cases must be resolved swiftly on merit, and comprehensive challans backed by strong evidence must be submitted to the courts without delay to ensure offenders face due punishment.

He instructed the force to ensure effective crime prevention by making full use of modern technology, intelligence-led policing, and the advanced Safe City surveillance system. IGP Islamabad reiterated that transparent investigations, effective policing, accountability, impartial enforcement of the law, and the protection of the lives and property of citizens remain the topmost priorities of the Islamabad Police.
