LAHORE
A shocking incident has come to light in Sargodha, in which a 14-year-old boy was allegedly buried alive after he reported sexual abuse. Police on Saturday said they had arrested three individuals, including the prime suspect, in connection with this case.
The 14-year-old resident of Mauza Mari, within the jurisdiction of Jhal Chakian police station, left home on the evening of June 25 at around 4:30 pm to attend a gathering and did not return until late at night. His family contacted the police helpline 15 and continued searching for him throughout the night, but found no trace of the child. The following day, June 26, at around 11 am, the child’s mother set out to search alongside her husband and a neighbour. From within the crops, they heard the sound of a child crying. On moving closer, they spotted a leg protruding from the ground. Rescue 1122 and the police were immediately informed.
Rescue workers pulled the child out of the earth and transferred him to District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital Sargodha, where doctors have confirmed that his condition is now out of danger.
Disclosure of sexual abuse
The statement the child gave upon regaining consciousness is harrowing. According to him, 20 days ago he had told Amjad — the elder brother of accused Qamar Abbas (son of Mola Bakhsh) — that Qamar had sexually abused him. On June 25, as he was making his way to the gathering, Qamar intercepted him at a place called Dera Wadar and confronted him for having reported the abuse. Shortly after, Amjad and a third brother, Muhammad Waris, also arrived on the scene. All three accused beat the child and dragged him into the fields, where they buried him alive in the ground.
FIR and legal proceedings
The child’s mother filed a written complaint at Jhal Chakian police station, upon which a case was registered under Sections 324, 34, and 376(i) of the Pakistan Penal Code. The nominated accused are Qamar Abbas, Amjad, and Muhammad Waris.
According to police, two of the accused were arrested initially, and the prime suspect Qamar was taken into custody the following day, bringing the total number of arrests to three. Police have stated that the sexual abuse will be confirmed once the medical and forensic reports are received.
The father of the affected child has said that influential figures in the area are pressuring the family to reach a settlement with the accused. The mother, who belongs to a poor, working-class family, wrote in her complaint: “I am a poor woman who earns her living through hard labour. A grave injustice has been done to me. The accused must be punished and justice must be served.”
Police have stated that the investigation is ongoing from every angle and that strict legal action will be taken against those responsible on the basis of evidence. The inquiry into the case has already been set in motion.
This is the second incident of harrowing abuse of minors in the district in recent days. On June 23, an eight-year-old girl was found raped and murdered in the upper floor of a building in Sargodha. It was alleged that a helper at a grocery shop below had taken the child to the roof, where the victim was later found raped and murdered. The suspected helper, Arsalan, was instantly killed in during an “encounter” with a CCD team, in which the CCD officials said that it was in during cross fire that Arsalan was killed by his associates.
