LAHORE
Police in Sargodha have registered a murder case against the employers of a 21-year-old Christian labourer, whose body was found hanging in an outhouse — but only after his family and members of the local Christian community took to the streets, laid his body on the main road, and demanded justice.
The body of Markus Masih was discovered on March 4, suspended from a girder inside a cattle shed owned by Muhammad Mohsin and his brother Muhammad Basharat, at Chak No. 36 South, falling under the jurisdiction of Kirana Police Station in Sargodha district. A local police team accompanied by a forensic unit responded to the scene and transferred the body to the Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The employers initially maintained that Masih had taken his own life. His mother and brother appeared to accept that account, providing written statements to police expressing no desire to pursue legal action. However, local police exercised caution and ordered the autopsy to rule out foul play — a decision that would prove consequential.
Autopsy reveals torture marks
Once the body was returned to the family following the post-mortem, relatives noticed what they described as unmistakable signs of physical abuse. The family alleged that the employers had tortured Markus Masih to death and staged the hanging to conceal their crime.
Tahir Naveed Chaudhary, a leader of the local Christian community who has been closely following the case, confirmed that the post-mortem findings were the turning point. “When the family members saw the torture marks on Markus’s dead body, suspicion arose that the landlords had tortured him, resulting in his death. The Christian community was alarmed at this alleged brutal killing of an impoverished youth,” Chaudhary said.
He added that the medical findings lent credibility to the family’s fears. “The autopsy report confirmed bruises and burns on the chest and limbs,” Chaudhary said.

Community blocks highway, forces action
Outraged by the findings, a large number of relatives and community members blocked the Sargodha-Lahore Road. Protesters placed Masih’s body on the carriageway and staged a sit-in that brought traffic on both sides of the highway to a standstill for several hours. Authorities eventually intervened with assurances of justice, and traffic was restored once those pledges were made.
Chaudhary, who helped coordinate the protest, pointed to a pattern he said the community knows all too well. “The landlords were influential and had initially coerced the family into giving a written undertaking that they did not want to pursue the case. This incident illustrates that members of the Christian community are often denied justice because they belong to a minority,” he said.

FIR lodged; suspects join police investigation
A First Information Report (FIR) was subsequently registered at Kirana Police Station. The complainant, Dilshad Masih — the deceased’s brother — accused Muhammad Mohsin and Muhammad Basharat of torturing Markus Masih to death and disguising the killing as a suicide. Both men have been charged under Section 302 (murder) and Section 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code.
Local police officials told Voicepk that both suspects had voluntarily joined the investigation and that arrests would follow once forensic evidence confirmed foul play. District police added that the case was being investigated and that they were committed to ensuring the aggrieved family received justice if the evidence supported it.
For the family of Markus Masih, and for a Christian community in Sargodha that has long felt vulnerable to the pressures of powerful landlords, the FIR is only the beginning. Whether it leads to a conviction — or quietly fades — will be closely watched.
