Along with the other people across Sindh, the marginalized transgender community also held a protest outside the Karachi Press Club, against the six canal issue. They were flanked by representatives of civil society.
Speaking at the occasion, transgender activists said that Sindh already had a shortage of water and extracting six canals from the river would be an extreme injustice to Sindh.
“Already we are paying the water mafia for our basic use of water,” said Jani Shah , member of Karachi District Council (Jamaat-e Islami). “Sindh has dried up because of the lack of water in the river in any case. Now if they make more canals on the river in order to provide water to an already barran region – a desert, then it would be a severe injustice.”
The activists said that due to lack of water, Sindh was unable to grow crops, and potable water was not easily available in even big cities.
“This matter is not just about politics, agriculture or economy, but about the survival of the people living in Sindh. This matter is of life and death,” said an activist. “There is no concept of life without water, therefore those in power will have to withdraw the decision to extract six canals from the Indus River, otherwise our protests will continue.”
