PARACHINAR
In a deeply concerning development, the Kurram district is experiencing a severe medical supply crisis that has left nearly 500,000 residents without essential medications.
For four and a half months, transportation routes connecting the restive district have been blocked, resulting in critical shortages of food, daily necessities, and life-saving medicines.
Residents share their struggles
“My wife is seriously ill, but we cannot find the medications she needs in the market. We are completely helpless,” Azmat Ali, a local resident from Parachinar, told Voicepk, expressing his anguish.
Similarly, Syed Jawad, another resident, highlighted the dire situation of medicine shortages in the district. “Parachinar’s medical stores are completely closed. My elderly parents, who suffer from heart conditions, cannot get their crucial medications,” he said.
The shortage of medicines has hit chronic patients hard. Tajir Khan, a heart patient, shared a heart-wrenching account: “I have sent my son to the market multiple times, but all medical stores are shut. I cannot find my medication anywhere.”
Pharmacies shut in protest
The Drugs Association leadership, including Syed Iftikhar Hussain and Syed Muhammad Hanif, held a press conference to explain their position. They alleged that while vegetable and grocery supply convoys are permitted, vehicles carrying medicines are being systematically excluded.
Syed Iftikhar emphasized their frustration: “We submitted a list of vehicles carrying medicine to the authorities, but they have consistently refused to allow these vehicles into Kurram with the convoys. “The officials are treating our lists like trash. We have been forced to close medical stores as a form of protest.”
Pharmacy owner reveals corruption allegations
Iqbal, a medical store owner, made serious allegations of corruption. “Authorities are demanding bribes to include medicine transportation vehicles in the convoys. We have refused to pay these bribes. If we were to pay, medicine prices would skyrocket, and we cannot sell medicines above the approved price,” he claimed.
Parachinar DHQ hospital faces mounting challenges
Dr. Syed Mir Hassan Jan, Medical Superintendent of District Headquarters Hospital Parachinar, highlighted the cascading effects of the shutterdown strike of pharmacies in Kurram. “The closure of medical stores has placed enormous pressure on our hospital. Not only are patients suffering, but the hospital’s operational challenges are multiplying exponentially,” he told Vopicepk.net.
The district administration acknowledged the crisis, stating that they are taking measures to provide relief. These include exploring helicopter services and convoy transportation to deliver medicines. They also mentioned ongoing efforts to resolve the situation under a peace agreement.
The ongoing crisis reveals a complex intersection of transportation restrictions, potential corruption, and the critical need for medical access. With nearly half a million people affected, the situation demands immediate intervention from provincial and federal authorities. The human cost of this medical supply blockade is immense, and immediate action is crucial to prevent further suffering in the Kurram District.
