A demonstration demanding the implementation of a long-standing peace agreement entered its fourth day on October 25.
Protesters called on the government to fulfill the 16-point accord signed by a former peace committee in July. Among the key demands is the release of former police officer Jamshed Khan, his two brothers, and notable tribal leader Mamez Ullah.
People from different walks of life visited the protest camp at the Maulana Abdul Sattar Shah Chowk. Elders travelling in rallies reached the venue of the sit-in, while political and social activists from Lakki Marwat and North Waziristan also turned up to express solidarity with the protesters.
Local leaders have expressed concerns about the growing influence of armed groups in the region.
“Armed groups are flexing their muscle everywhere in the absence of police officials who disappear from the streets at dusk,” Nasir Bangash, a prominent trader, told Voicepk.net. He said the protesters were also seeking the removal of the district police chief and deputy inspector general for the crackdown on peace committee members.
Awami National Party (ANP) leader Taimur Khan Bangash accused the government of targeting peace committee members.
“Over 300 individuals have been detained under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) in the district,” Khan claimed. He said the government should stop the crackdown and accede to their demands for peace in the region.
The protest, which began on October 21 following a peace march, underscores the ongoing tensions and the locals’ desire for a lasting peace in the region.
