A girls’ middle school in Zeraki village, North Waziristan, Pakistan, was blown up during the early hours of Tuesday, July 23. The assailants targeted the building with explosive devices, leaving the building severely damaged. Fortunately, no casualties were reported as the school was empty at the time of the attack.
Seven rooms of the building were completely destroyed. The school has a total enrolment of 255 girls.
Law enforcement officials responding to the incident launched an investigation and security measures have been heightened to prevent further attacks on educational institutions in the region.
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Education Minister Faisal Khan Tarakai condemned the attack, reaffirming the government’s commitment to promoting women’s education. He assured that efforts were underway to restore the school to full functionality soon.
This incident follows a timeline of similar attacks on girls schools in the Waziristan area. Two schools in North Waziristan were targeted in May. No organizations or individuals have taken responsibilities for any of the attacks.
