The heirs of Sara Sammu, who died in a shooting on the National Highway near Gulshan-e-Hadid in Karachi, have referred their mother’s case to the Sindh High Court. They allege that the Steel Town police fired shots that killed Sammu, and injured her daughter.
Saddam Hussain, the son of Sara Sammu, and an eyewitness, told Voicepk that his mother was ill, and they were returning home from a check-up at Dow Hospital in Karachi when police opened fire on their car, which killed his mother’s death and injured his sister.
The family of Sara Sammu initially approached the Malir district court to file a case against the police, but the court rejected their request. Consequently, they sought intervention from the Sindh High Court.
Their lawyer, Ashraf Sammu, said that the Malir court instructed the victim’s family to record their statements in the existing police case, but they refused, arguing that the police-registered case does not accurately represent the incident or its location.
Senior criminal lawyer Shaukat Hayat said that registering an FIR is the right of the heirs.
On Saturday, protests were held in front of the press clubs in Thatta, Badin, and various districts, including Karachi, demanding the registration of a case according to the heirs’ wishes. Earlier, on July 5, a sit-in was organised in Gulshan-e-Hadid, during which police assured the protesters that a case would be registered as per their demands.
Despite a letter from the Home Department to the Sessions Judge requesting a judicial inquiry into the incident, no action has been taken yet.
