BILAL BASEER
HARIPUR:
A man allegedly beat his wife to death over domestic issues in Naqarchian, Mian Dheri village of Ghazi tehsil in Haripur. The victim, identified as Saima Bibi, aged 34, succumbed to the assault last week, police confirmed.
According to the FIR filed at the Ghazi police station by Basit Mehmood, Bibi’s brother, the accused Mohammad Sabir had a history of drug addiction and regularly subjected his wife and their four children to physical abuse. The FIR mentions, “She continued to tolerate the torture inflicted by her husband because she was determined not to abandon her children.”
Reason of Violence
According to the statement given by the accused Sabir to the police, a heated argument ensued between Sabir and his wife concerning the sale of their house, ultimately resulting in her death.
“He engaged in a dispute with his wife regarding the sale of their house, to which she vehemently objected, stating it was the home of their children and she would never agree to it. Sabir resorted to violence, using a club to attack his wife,” says Ghazi Muhammad Amir, Station House Officer (SHO).
He adds that Sabir became aggressive, beating his wife with a club before fleeing the crime scene.
Complainant Basit Mehmood informed Voicepk that he received the news of Bibi’s death from the accused’s brother. “After arranging transportation and arriving at the village, he, assisted by local residents, transported his sister’s body to the Tehsil Headquarter Hospital in Ghazi for autopsy,” he says.
After the lodging of an FIR against Sabir, the police arrested him. Subsequent interrogation led to a confession of guilt under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code before a judicial magistrate.
Meanwhile, Muhammad Younis Khan, a member of the dispute resolution committee of the local government setup, expressed regret that the case was not brought to the attention of the jirga.
He says that women sacrifice their lives without compromising on traditions. “The deceased woman exemplified this commitment, as she abided by the cultural norm of residing in her in-laws’ household, standing by her husband, under all circumstances,” he adds.
