Labour Minister: Minimum Wage Set to Increase to at Least Rs32,000

Labour Minister Saeed Ghani has indicated that the minimum wage for workers in Sindh is likely to be raised to a range of Rs32,000 to Rs35,000. This increase comes in response to the rising prices of essential goods, which have particularly affected low-income and middle-class families.

The provincial minimum wage board has begun preparing recommendations for the raise. Two years ago, Sindh became the first province to increase the minimum wage to Rs25,000. In addition to this, the government has also increased the death grant for deceased workers’ families, wedding assistance, education support, and scholarships for laborers.

Ghani emphasized the need to devolve the Workers Welfare Fund and the Employees Old-age Benefits Institution in line with the 18th constitutional amendment. Regarding the mayoral election in Karachi, Ghani clarified that a candidate only needs the majority support of the city council members, without a specific vote count requirement.
