Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has rejected the resignation of PML-N party’s central leader Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar.

A delegation of federal ministers arrived at Senator Tarar’s residence in Islamabad and informed him of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s decision and message that Mr Azam Nazeer Tarar should resume his duties as the Minister of Law and Justice.

The delegation comprised of Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan, Minster for Economic and Political Affairs Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Minister of Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique and Information Minister Maryam Aurangzeb.

Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar issued his resignation as Minister of Law and Justice on October 24 after the Asma Jahangir Conference where members of the audience made derogatory comments about the armed forces and former Army Chief General Bajwa. It is believed that he was asked to distance himself from the cause of Asma Jahangir, however, he instead gave in his resignation.

According to the notification issued by the Cabinet Division, “in terms of rule 3(4) of the Rules of Business, 1973, the Prime Minister has been pleased to allocate the portfolio of law and justice to Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, Federal Minister, with immediate effect. Consequently, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, the Federal Minister for Economic and Political Affairs, shall cease to hold the portfolio of law and justice”.

After Azam Nazeer Tarar’s resignation, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq was given the additional charge of the Law ministry. Interestingly, the Premier rejected the resignation a month later and on the day when the new army chief General Syed Asim Munir formally assumed charge.

Senator Tarar assumed charge of his office in Islamabad today on 30th November 2022. He received a warm welcome from his staff who celebrated his return as the Minister of Law and Justice. The reinstatement was also celebrated widely online by other officials, politicians and political activists.
