5 arrested for gang rape

Jhelum Police on Sunday arrested all five suspects nominated in a case pertaining to the gang rape of a woman within 24 hours of the filing of a first information report.

While the initial report was filed under section 376(2) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), which carries the death penalty, section 375(i) was also included. Police stated that an identification parade will be carried out in jail.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Government has announced to restore the post of AIG of Gender Crime for better investigation and prosecution of increasing cases of abuse against women.

Police rescue 50 hostages

Sukkur Police managed to rescue 50 members of the Jakhrani clan, including women and children, being held captive by the Shar clan.

According to police, the incident came about as a result of a feud between the two communities. Reportedly, the Shars believe that some Jakhrani men were responsible for the gang rape and murder of a woman of their clan some days back.

A Station House Officer (SHO) was shot in the head while a villager belonging to the Jakhrani community also sustained a bullet wound during the operation.

Private KP health units perform better

According to Adam Smith International, health facilities outsourced to private firms outperformed government-operated units in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The provincial government had handed some 20 hospitals to the private sector in 2012, out of which four are fully operational while the rest have yet to reach full capacity.
