Pakistani-origin girl in Italy likely murdered for ‘honour’
Carabinieri police in Italy have launched an investigation into the possible murder of an 18-year-old Pakistani-origin girl, Saman, believed to have been murdered by her parents, an uncle and two cousins for refusing an arranged marriage with a relative in Pakistan.
The girl was moved to shelter home after alerting social services last year in November while she was still a minor. Saman had also reported her parents to the police but eventually returned to them on the 11th of April.
An investigation was formally launched when police found their home in Novellara empty during a check on the 5th of May. Footage from a nearby security camera showed five people equipped with shovels, a crowbar and a bucket leaving the house in the dark and returning two-and-a-half hours later. The footage is dated April 29. Police also later discovered that Saman’s family had left for Pakistan without her.
Police have yet to find the girl’s body during an ongoing search in a nearby farmland where she is suspected to have been buried.
