March 23rd, 2021

LAHORE

The 23rd of March marks two important moments in the history of Pakistan. It was when the All-India Muslim League formally adopted the declaration of independence of Pakistan in 1940, and when the country’s first Constitution was approved in 1956 (although it would later be abrogated when martial law was first declared in 1958).

However, all was not as simple and clean as our history books tell us. We join Syed Farooq Haider Maududi, scholar and son of Jamaat-e-Islami founder Maulana Syed Abul A’la Maududi, who gives us an alternate history lesson on the origins of civil-military relations in Pakistan, and the tragedy that was Partition.
