No child abuse at shelter: welfare department
An inquiry by the social welfare department following claims by PTI MPA Madiha Nisar that children at Darul Atfal in Peshawar were being sexually abused found no evidence of such activity. A three-member team visited the center which currently houses 29 boys and 20 girls, and were informed by the resident orphans that they were satisfied with their arrangements and the friendly staff.
The center was also fitted with all the necessary arrangements, the committee found, including a dining hall, study rooms, recreational rooms, bathrooms and a kitchen. The committee however recommended that the center improve record keeping, hire more trained staff and arrange counseling sessions for the resident children.
It is important to note that Fazal Shakoor from the Panel of Chairmen the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly had ordered the constitution of a special committee to investigate Nisar’s claims, however the social welfare department committee carried out its own visit prior to the formation of the assembly’s special committee. Moreover, Nisar claims that she possesses evidence of ongoing abuse at the shelter, and that the committee has yet to be notified.
