Husband Tortures & Kills Wife In Sukkur
Police apprehended Rasool Shah and his nephews, Razzaq and Bashir Shah, for torturing and clubbing to death Shah’s wife, Najma on Tuesday, June 23. Najma’s body, which was missing her eyes, was recovered from the couple’s residence in Rohri, Sukkur. Two other suspects, Asif and Kashif Shah are still at large.
Rasool Shah confessed that he had killed his wife after she had learned that he had contracted a second marriage, and demanded a divorce. Unable to pay the prenuptial amount of Rs. 300,000, he instead paid his nephews Rs. 100,000 to murder his wife.
Man Dies In Police Custody
Muhammad Zaraib Khakal, a government worker, was allegedly tortured to death in police custody for motorcycle theft in Dera Ghazi Khan. The deceased’s family staged a sit-in at the gates of the Chief Minister House on Tuesday, June 23, demanding a judicial probe into Zaraib’s custodial murder. They claimed that the deceased was arrested in a false case 5 days ago, and were threatened by a police offical with Zaraib’s murder in an “encounter” if they failed to pay a bribe of Rs. 300,000.
Journalists Boycott Balochistan Assembly
Reporters walk out of Balochistan Assembly press gallery on Tuesday in protest of the illegal detainment and torture of two Chaman-based reporters, Abdul Mateen and Saeed Ali Achakzai, by local law enforcement agencies. The walk-out was organized by the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and the Balochistan Union of Journalists (BUJ).
The two reporters had been arrested under the Maintenance of Public Order Act for charges yet unknown. Upon opposition by journalist groups, Mateen and Achakzai were released from Mach jail, bearing torture marks on their bodies.
