The annual Students' Solidarity March held in Lahore on 25 November 2022 once again called for the withdrawal of the ban on student unions in the country.
"When I decided to explore the role played by women in student politics during the 60s-80s, I did not know that there would be such a huge lack of information. It proved that we have erased or neglected the role of women from history."
The arrest order against Dr Ammar Jan has sparked condemnation and fury across the board. Human rights defenders and students bodies have raised their voices against this act by the government and say the demonstration had been peaceful with no reason for any police crackdown or arrests.
Inside sources say that some of the students who were part of the march, particularly those who were leading it had been receiving mysterious phone calls days before the march itself. The unknown callers would threaten them and warned them of dire consequences if the march took place.
The young students banged on their drums, shouted from every corner and raised their slogans in solidarity with the victims of harassment at Balochistan University Mashal Khan, his family and others like him the transgender community who marched for equal access to education alongside students, ethnic minorities and labourers, who marched for freedom. It was heartening to see students from across Pakistan raising voice for these victims and bringing them to light after they have faded from the memory of the mainstream media.
The demand to restore student unions was lit with a hope that the protest would prove to be the first step in the right direction.
