UN rapporteurs call for halting death-row convict’s execution

Man acquitted after spending 10 years in jail

UN experts laud Pakistan for commuting death sentences of mentally ill inmates.
February 19th, 2021; By Staff Reporter; LAHORE; United Nations’ experts on human rights have lauded Pakistan’s Supreme Court for commuting the death sentence of three mentally challenged inmates. The body has also called upon judiciaries worldwide to follow the example set by the SC of Pakistan.
4,500 languishing on death row in Pakistan
In Pakistan, over 45,00 inmates are on death row. But the apex court has upheld only 22% of death sentences. In 2015, two brothers Ghulam Sarwar and Ghulam Qadir were hanged to death by jail authorities, only to be found innocent by the SC a year later and exonerated.
