The inaugural Asma Jahangir conference celebrated the vision and legacy of Asma Jahangir (1952-2018), an internationally acclaimed rights activist and constitutional lawyer of Pakistan.
The conference was hosted by AGHS Legal Aid Cell (Asma’s law firm) and was held in collaboration with the Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan.
The conference was attended by the then Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice ( r ) Saqib Nisar, Chairman Pakistan People Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Federal Minister for Human Rights, Shireen Mazari, Former Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.
The star-studded affair featured personalities from within and outside Pakistan. The participants included, but were not limited to, journalists Hamid Mir and Farieha Aziz, Nepalese journalist and founder of Himal SouthAsian magazine Kanax Mani Dixit, and the Asian Program Coordinator at the Committee to Protect Journalists, Steven Butler.

The conference also featured internationally recognized activists such as Kamla Bhasin and Orzala Nemat, while the world of law was represented by former judge to the Australian High Court, Michael Kirby, and local lawyer and founder of the Digital Rights Foundation, Nighat Dad. Other prominent figures included the ambassador of the European Union to Pakistan, Jean-Francois Cautain, and Pakistani politician and activist Bushra Gohar.
The conference discussed and devised strategies for the promotion of justice by strengthening the rule of law and democracy, protection of fundamental rights, strengthening the independence of the judiciary and mainstreaming gender
