A recent World Bank study has unveiled a concerning trend in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: a significant rise in maternal depression and anxiety. This alarming development has far-reaching implications for the region’s children, as maternal mental health plays a pivotal role in early childhood development.
The study found that mothers from marginalized groups, such as refugees, those with limited education, and rural residents, are disproportionately affected by mental health issues. These mothers are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and parenting stress, which can hinder their ability to provide nurturing care and support to their children. For instance, a mother struggling with depression may have difficulty engaging in playful interactions with her child, which are essential for cognitive and emotional development.
Various stressors, such as poverty, food insecurity, natural disasters, community violence, discrimination, and domestic violence, can exacerbate maternal mental health problems. For example, a mother living in poverty may experience chronic stress due to financial worries, which can increase her risk of developing depression and anxiety.

To address this pressing issue, the study suggests making policy changes is integral. It is imperative to expand access to mental healthcare services, particularly in rural areas. Additionally, efforts must be made to reduce exposure to stressors by implementing social and economic policies that alleviate poverty, inequality, and discrimination. For instance, providing access to affordable housing, quality education, and job training can help reduce poverty and its associated stressors.
Prioritizing maternal mental health of mothers is making a strategic investment in the region’s long-term development, said the study.
