A man has been arrested in connection with the kidnap and rape of a female student of a private university in the city.
In the first investigation report registered with Nawab Town Police Station on November 29, the female student told police that she was standing on the main road after coming out of the university campus in the afternoon when a man driving a car stopped in front of her.
The man held her up at gunpoint and forcibly drove her in his car to a house near Expo Centre, she told police. The man sexually the female student in the house. The girl was taken to a hospital for medical examination.
The Lahore Police Investigation Wing said the suspect fled the scene after assaulting the female student. According to police, the suspect was also a student of a separate private university on Raiwind Road.
Investigation Police Nawab Town and Gender Cell Sadar Division arrested the accused with the help of modern technology, the Senior Superintendent of Police Investigation said in a statement. The case will be presented in the court after fulfilling all the legal requirements, the SSP Investigation said.
Incidents, where suspects have kidnapped and raped victims at gunpoint, have previously been reported in the city. In July, a man was arrested for raping a female student of a medical university at gunpoint at a house in Lahore.
According to statistics from the Punjab Police website, 3275 rape cases have been registered in the province from January to November this year. Out of the total cases this year, police had filed challans of 1874 rape cases with courts while 819 cases were still under investigation. Interestingly, 612 rape cases were cancelled across the province in the period.
Activists have pointed out the dismal conviction in rape cases due to slack police investigation and prosecution. The parliament recently passed new laws to improve police investigation and prosecution of rape cases.
