Bajaur jirga bars women from collecting stipend

On Saturday, February 6, elders of the Warah area of Mohmand tehsil, Bajaur district, imposed a ban on all local women from personally collecting monthly stipends of the Child Wellness Grant from centers set up by the World Bank as it was against local customs. Jirga leaders stated the decision came after the program management failed to adhere to demands to give the stipend to men or employ female staff at the centers. The tribunal also resolved that an Rs. 10,000 fine will be imposed on tribesmen who allow their women to visit these centers and on families whose women contact local radio stations.

Dead infant found near Bisham hospital

Police launched an investigation following the discovery of a dead newborn near the doctors’ hostel at the Bisham tehsil headquarters (THQ) hospital on Friday. The hospital’s deputy medical superintendent has also implored the Assistant Commissioner Khurram Rehman and the police to inquire into the swathes of quackeries cropping up in the area.

Mother, son gunned down for ‘honour’ in Gujrat

Bushra Bibi (50) and her son Ahmed Raza (17) were gunned down by one Ziaullah Jutt, his brother Ghulam Mustafa and their accomplices in their home in Hardaspur village, Gujrat. According to Ghafoor Jutt, Bushra Bibi’s husband, their son Shahzaib had eloped with Ziaullah’s daughter some months back, and claimed that his family were targeted for ‘honour’. A case has been registered against four nominated and five unidentified suspects.
