Man Arrested For Alleged Blasphemy

Arrouti police in Toba Tek Singh arrested a man on Tuesday, June 2, for allegedly burning pages of the Quran along the boundary wall of Government Boys and Girls Primary School of Chak 763-GB. Per the complaint of one Adil Hussain Shahzad, the accused was booked under Section 295-B, which carries a life sentence for defiling the Quran.

Protest Over Extra-Judicial Murder

The Bajaur Youth Jirga arranged a protest against police outside the Bajaur Press Club in Khar on Tuesday, June 2 against the alleged extrajudicial murder of one Zahidullah Khan. Zahidullah, a 25-year-old laborer, was residing in Kotli city in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AKJ) for work for the past couple of years. Two months ago, the youth was arrested by AJK police for what protesters deemed a false theft charge and tortured to death. Protesters cited the distinct torture marks on Zahidullah’s body as evidence that he had been murdered by police while in custody and demanded an investigation into the incident.

An Attempt At Sindhi Journalist’s Life

Two unknown persons riding a motorcycle chased down and fired at senior vice-president of the Shikarpur Union of Journalists and journalist for the Sindh daily Koshish, Jamil Ahmed Mahar, in an attempt on his life. Jamil, who survived the encounter, stated that the masked assailants had given him chase and shot at him – Jamil suffered bullet wounds to his legs and was taken to Lakhi Taluka Hospital by passersby where he was given first aid.
