Unregistered Persons Go Hungry
Immigrants & other underprivileged non-citizens excluded from government aid programs face starvation and homelessness amidst lockdown. Official aid through programs such as the Benazir Income Support Program and the Ehsaas Emergency Cash Program supports only those beneficiaries who are registered as citizens through NADRA. As such, government support schemes leave out underprivileged refugees, displaced persons, and immigrants who are among the worst affected by the lockdown situation. In Karachi alone, 200,000 Afghan laborers and scavengers have been deprived of work and livelihoods.
First Aid Denied Over COVID-19 Fears
A petition submitted in the Sindh High Court (SHC) demands provincial and federal governments probe private and public hospitals reportedly denying first aid to patients seeking treatment or first aid without until they are tested for the virus first. Petitioners argue that the practice is denying people their fundamental human right to life and good health as delaying aid to demand COVID-19 tests may exacerbate the ailing patients’ conditions.
