Munizae Jahangir speaks with Humayun Zaman Mirza, Chairman Jammu Kashmir Human Rights Commission at Faiz Festival about the plight of Kashmiris and the political tensions between Pakistan and India that keep families divided despite the 2005 confidence building measure which opened 4 points in Kashmir. “Why can’t we allow Kashmiris to cross the LOC if Sikhs are allowed entry into Pakistan through Kartarpur and the Wagah-Attari border remains open between India’s and Pakistan’s Punjab?” asks Zaman, urging the government to help unite Kashmiri families. The move to build bridges between the two countries in 2005 was especially welcomed by divided families across Kashmir. Last year however, relations soured and the crossing points were closed halting all trade and people to people contact amongst divided Kashmiri families.
